This Friday your morning cup of coffee will do more than just wake you up. The sixth, annual CafeSmart Day is taking place on Friday 5th August.
This means that indulging in your first, or fourth, cup of coffee will actually support the less fortunate in Australia.
The CafeSmart movement was started by StreetSmart – a wonderful grassroots charity supporting homelessness. For one day each year coffee drinkers all over Australia are encouraged to visit cafes for the CafeSmart Day. Participating cafes will donate $1 from every coffee sold on that day and 100% of the proceeds will go to helping those that are homeless or at risk.
Every night across Australia more than 105,000 people are homeless. Two out of three people who look for crisis accommodation are turned away and many end up on the street or living in sub-standard living conditions.
Homelessness is complex, with each person experiencing a different journey. What you might not realise is that close to half the homeless are female — many with young children — and nearly half of all homeless are under the age of 25.
Last year, the event raised more than $135,000, and with your help, we can reach the 2016 goal of $175,000.
To help reach this goal simply head to any participating cafe and purchase your usual skinny latte, cappuccino or caffeinated drink of your choice.
Grinders Coffee’s flagship Lygon Street store, Grinders on Light – in Thebarton (Adelaide) and other Grinders cafes across Victoria and New South Wales are taking part this year. If you haven’t checked out the new award winning store now is the perfect opportunity to see how the store has changed, pick up a quality cup of joe and help the community – all in one fell swoop.
If you can’t make it to Grinders CafeSmart can help you find a local cafe in your area.
