Grab your sombrero and don your finest poncho because it’s taco time. Prepare to indulge in Mexican food complete with an Asian infusion at Adelaide’s own Mexican Society of Chinatown.

This trendy venue was the product of Walter Ventura’s desire to bring something completely new and different to Adelaide, unlike anything that had been done before. Ventura teamed up with Greggory Hill, whose cooking career has spanned the likes of Lucky Lupitas and Hispanic Mechanic, and Alejandro Huerta, who arrived directly from Mexico to provide Adelaide with an authentic taste of his native cuisine.

The team has curated a playful menu that combines the obvious Mexican favourites – tostadas, enchiladas, nachos and of course the humble taco, with Chinese inspired fusions.

Take the tequila noodles for example, combining sweet potato noodles with papaya, pineapple, orange, coriander, chilli and cherry tomatoes with hints of tequila; or perhaps the whole barramundi served with jalapeños and Asian inspired plum and ginger sauce. Other menu standouts include the elote – corn on the cob brushed with coffee mayonnaise and parmesan cheese, and the after dinner sweets including the Mexican donut with homemade cajeta ice cream, cinnamon, toasted cherries and almonds.

Whilst the beverage list features a range of international and Australian beer and wines, the standout is the extensive variety of tequilas to choose from. Each is described according to its distinctive flavour, from hints of toasted almond, vanilla and cinnamon, to floral aromas or tones of light pepper and mild spice.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a Mexican fiesta without a margarita… or seven. The cocktail menu features a range of seven different variations on the classic margarita, tailored to your preference of a particular tequila, salt or spice. Whether you take yours dirty, lychee infused, on the rocks or with a hint of jalapeño, you won’t be disappointed.

The restaurant itself is designed in the same fun, quirky style as the menu, setting candy-pink furnishings against the bright teal backdrop. The eccentric furnishings and spirited vibes add to the playful atmosphere that makes Mexican Society of Chinatown the perfect spot for cocktails and nibbles, or a fully-fledged Mexican banquet.
