Barbarella Gelato and Wine
Block Arcade, Collins Street, Melbourne, Vic

For tourists and locals alike, Block Arcade is a gem of Melbourne. With its Victorian era laneways and boutique clothing and food stores, you’ll always find something that catches your eye and your imagination. Impressive arches, towering glass domes, intricate mosaics inspired by Milan’s Galleria Vittoria, and now Barbarella Gelato and Wine.
This latest entry to the winding thoroughfare is brought to you from the team behind the European, City Wine Shop and Spring Street Grocer, and its prime position makes for the perfect pause mid-wander. Camouflaged with its curved black ironwork, marble counters and dark oak tables, it fits in seamlessly amongst the 30 other bespoke outlets.
Barbarella is open from early morning until late, ready to catch you with a coffee and pastry on your way to work, or cure a long day at the office with a glass of red. Food is served until 3pm and includes the likes of Melbourne boutique 5&Dime Bagels topped with cured smoked salmon, herbed avocado, Lebanese cucumber, red onion, wild rocket and cream cheese; and a black rice salad of cherry tomatoes, walnuts, smashed peas, avocado, buffalo mozzarella, lemon and honey dressing.
The lever-operated coffee machine serves up Italy’s favourite Romcaffè, but we all know what you really came for. Fresh house-made gelati and sorbetto courtesy of Spring Street’s Gelateria Primavera is delivered daily with offerings such as pistachio, chocolate and passionfruit. Opt for a cheeky scoop or take home a whole tub for later.
Indulge in a malt milkshake made with fior di latte gelato, shaken up with combinations such as salted caramel and popcorn, or chocolate with white chocolate shavings. For something fresher, organic cold-pressed juices from Spring Street Grocer include a Seriously Green with broccoli, silverbeet, green apple, kale, cucumber, celery, lime and basil.
Beers are cosmopolitan with bottles from Czech and Belgium to Munich and our very own Brunswick. A short list of red and whites will soothe your shopping legs, or cheers the end of the day with a glass of bubbly.
