The Emerald Peacock

The Emerald Peacock has to be the ultimate hybrid of a classic Melbourne bar – hidden away from public view, but reaching to the skies in the form of a rooftop.
Occupying a heritage-listed building on Lonsdale Street, the rooftop bar and cocktail lounge is an old hand in Melbourne hospitality years, opening in 2009. It’s owned and operated by Hospitality Consulting Group, the group behind the much-loved Seamstress. With such a central location and expansive space, it was the ideal spot for Tally Konstas and his team to offer Melburnians a spot to dine and drink the night away.
Tally is no stranger to the hospitality game: previous to this venture, he owned The Apartment and Tony Starrs Kitten Club for well over a decade and has run Seamstress concurrently for several years. At The Emerald Peacock, his expertise translates to an opulent space, where cocktails are coveted and time passes all too quickly. The venue is divided a number of distinct areas: the Cocktail Lounge, Peacock Lounge, Feather Lounge, four opulent private booths and the Rooftop.
Enter from the street and head up some stairs to find the Cocktail Lounge, resplendent with irregular wood panelling and vintage highlights. It’s on this level that you’ll also find The Feather Lounge, a versatile event space often packed to capacity with celebratory visitors.
The Peacock Lounge is reminiscent of old world sophistication – graceful ornate peacock wallpaper graces the walls and fabrics are lush, crushed velvets in solids and stripes. Everything is set off by the flicker of dim candlelight, keeping the mood sultry.
Upstairs is the ‘piece de resistance’ – the rooftop. With a more relaxed vibe than downstairs, the rooftop is styled around recycled woods and natural tones, taking full advantage of its lantern-lit space and beautiful views of the city skyline. The overall effect is a mixture of retro and eclectic decadence that marries style with a fantastic ambience.
The Emerald Peacock can be relied upon for a true cocktail experience, with well loved classics and ingenious twists and creations. If you’re out looking for that special someone, order the Cupid’s Daisy – which combines Aperol, pomegranate, vanilla liqueur, rose syrup, grapefruit and Paul Louis blanc de blancs for a rose-tinted treat.
However, it’s not just cocktails in which the Peacock excels. Tapas-style sharing options and gourmet pizzas complete the offering, ensuring you’ll never go hungry. There are cheeseboards and charcuterie, as well as slightly larger options like soft shell crab sliders served with coriander, Asian salad and chilli mayo.
Each weekend, you can also book in for a unique girls’ picnic, where the bubbles are free-flowing and sweets and sandwiches are available, high tea style. Come darkness, DJs also come out to play, with a rotating list appearing each Friday and Saturday.
The Emerald Peacock is more just a pretty picture – just like its namesake, it’s a beautiful explosion of colour and texture, making it the ideal setting in which to enjoy a night of drinking and dining.
