One of Sydney’s most iconic bakeries has moved south of the border, bringing its cult cakes to the streets of Carlton. BlackStar Pastry has set up shop at Cafe Italia for the next three months, providing Melburnians access to a range of its decadent treats.
Chef and Patissier, Chris The, opened his first BlackStar Pastry in Sydney’s Newtown in 2008. It was an enormous success, with his Strawberry Watermelon cake soon becoming one of the nation’s most Instagrammed sweets. This positive reaction was all he needed to open two more stores across the city, in Rosebery and the CBD.
BlackStar Melbourne is the first outpost outside of the Harbour City, and one that Chris has had his eye on for a while. A friendship with Cafe Italia’s owner James Meehan provided the perfect opportunity to try it out, with a three-month pop up in the heart of the city’s Little Italy.
Here, you can sample a limited range of their core sweets line, best enjoyed with a cup of Little Marionette coffee. Blackstar’s arrival also marks Little Marionnette’s first foray down south, making this coffee and cake a completely new experience.
Pop by to try not only the strawberry watermelon flavour explosion, but a host of other options, including orange and Persian fig cake, Amadei chocolate and hazelnut torte, and black sesame and yuzu cake.
Like its Sydney outlets, this BlackStar will aim to be carbon neutral, with biodegradable coffee cups and cake boxes, and an aim to eliminate food waste.
The pop-up will be sticking around until May and is open every day. Whatever you do, don’t leave it until the last minute to test it out – as one taste will leave you wanting more.
