$$ - $$$

From the team that brought you Cremorne hideout Dennis the Menace and converted garage, St Edmonds, comes Grange Road Egg Shop. Inhabiting the first number of Grange Road Toorak, the kitsch eatery is serving contemporary Australian for breakfast and lunch.

The menu is designed by Aleksander Nitecki, best known for his work at London’s Yotam Ottolenghi. His dishes hope to cater for everyone, from the health conscious to the overtly indulgent.

The Tudor style shell (pardon the pun) of the heritage listed building, may deceive passerbys, but step inside and be welcomed by the modern scandi-interiors. Yoke yellow, shell pink and duck egg blue colour the chairs, tables and walls, and a bronze geometric pattern creates a funky feature.

The egg theme doesn’t stop there. The design team at DB architecture has re-appropriated the simple egg with elements such as curved egg style chairs and textured crackles. Lavish lighting features poke out from the walls and greenery adds spontaneity to the well thought-out design.

Strikingly, the first six items on the menu contain no eggs. They’re your sweeter breakfast fare with options such as roasted yellow peach with tahini, black sesame and wild flower honey on brioche, and Dr. Marty’s crumpets with caramelised strawberries, crème fraiche and basil.

‘Larger plates’ bring in the tasty protein with combinations such as the fried duck egg with mushrooms, lamb sausage, labneh and sourdough; and a kale and cabbage bowl with wild rice, almonds, avocado, Grana Padano and a poached egg.

Pop in for lunch and try a fresh salad such as the beetroot with fennel, goat’s curd and candied walnuts, or opt for one of the ‘not so lighter plates’. The orecchiette is covered with a rich lamb neck and olive ragu, topped with bitey Grana Padano, or munch on prawn brioche sliders with celeriac remoulade. Sandwiches include buttermilk-fried chicken with cayenne pepper salt, red cabbage and kewpie mayo in ciabatta.

Single origin coffee comes from Richmond’s Maker Fine Coffee, and a house blend is courtesy of North Geelong’s Roastcraft.  A range of fresh juices, shakes and sodas are also on offer including a peach and maple, and a rhubarb spritz.
