They may be little, but there’s nothing simple about the cakes on offer at Le Petit Gateau. The patisserie, run by award-winning pastry chef, Pierrick Boyer, is home to some of the most complicated treats in town, made with so much love and care that you can practically taste it.
Upon first examination, it seems hard to improve his award-winning selections, but Pierrick has dedicated his life to doing just that. Born in France, he imbues the picture-perfect pastries with his own style, featuring the freshest natural ingredients and a combination of French and Australian pastry techniques.
Pierrick travelled the world before calling Melbourne home, having lived in Italy, Croatia, Brussels, the United States, as well as throughout France. In the 1990s he helped establish a French patisserie in Palm Springs, California. From there, he assisted in reopening the Ritz Carlton hotel in Boston, and went on to work with a number of lauded chefs.
On a mission to create the most creative and delicious pastries possible, Pierrick moved to Melbourne in 2004 and took on the job of Head Pastry Chef at the RACV headquarters. As luck had it, he fell in love with Melbourne’s diverse food and culture, and opened Le Petit Gateau in 2007.
Translating to ‘little cakes’, Le Petit Gateau showcases Pierrick’s international experience. He oversees all operations, while Joel Thomson manages front of house. All of the cakes, tarts, and pastries are made in house daily – in fact, you can see the pastry chefs hard at work through the windows from the cafe’s tables.
With white walls and black tables and chairs, the cafe’s decor allows the cake and tart display case to fill the room with colour. Each creation could be described as minimalist and contemporary, made with locally sourced dairy, seasonal fruits, vegetables and organic microherbs.
The signature cake is the Mister Green Tea – an all-green cake topped with edible gold leafing and a dollop of raspberry jam. Inside, the cake features a green tea and raspberry cream, green tea mousse and white chocolate.
While the Mister Green Tea may be the signature sweet, it often competes with the brownie and passionfruit chocolate gateau as the most popular.
A masterful combination of rich chocolate and seasonal fruit that leaves even the most intense chocoholic satisfied, it boasts a brownie as the base that is then layered with crunchy praline, passionfruit custard and chocolate mousse. To finish, the entire cake is given a coat of ganache and decorated with sculpted chocolate and pieces of passionfruit gelee.
For those who like savoury as well as sweet, Le Petit Gateau offers an ever-changing savoury menu, where a soup of the day, bagels, and a selection of toasts change daily.
