Set just behind the bustle of Glenferrie Road is a local Hawthorn favourite, Short Straw; a cafe built around the premise that a simple cup of coffee has the power to bring people together.

Kiah Erich is the friendly face that will greet you on your daily coffee run. Being a coffee lover and a people’s person, she’s a firm believer that coffee is an integral force in forming any relationship. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick coffee or settling in for a languid brunch, you’ll be well looked after by Kiah and her dedicated front-of-house team, whose collective focus is on ensuring a relaxing customer experience.

When it comes to coffee, Short Straw has adopted the old adage ‘keep it simple’, by offering espresso-based coffee, filter and cold brew, allowing them to keep tight control of the quality of every cup.

The house blend comes from Bendigo-based company, Undercover Roasters. Kiah chose the team partly for their great respect for the origins of their coffee, as well as the fact that they only source from ethical producers who take the utmost care in hand picking and carefully processing the coffee.

All of Undercover’s master roasters are trained to honour the unique flavour characteristics of each coffee growing region. Their brand is rooted in humility and they understand that a good cup of coffee goes well beyond the cup itself. It’s a tri-pronged process that starts with respecting the work of the farmer in the roasting process and ends with the careful work of the barista.

Rest assured that Undercover’s beans are in safe hands with Head Barista, Anthony, at Short Straw, who grinds fresh to order and pumps out golden espresso with a healthy crema. There is also a rotating selection of single origins used for black coffee and filter, so be sure to ask Anthony for his recommendation.

Head Chef, Jose Chave, has designed the food menu with a broad appeal, featuring classic dishes such as eggs benedict alongside more innovative brunch dishes that will suit health-nuts and gourmands alike.

For lunch, don’t look past the fresh New York–style bagels served with fries. If you’re after something lighter, opt for the poke bowl with cured sesame seed salmon, soy beans, avocado, multigrain rice and a zingy ponzu sauce. A selection of fresh smoothies and milkshakes are sure to keep the ankle-biters happy too.

Young Melbourne designer, CJ Wright, is responsible for the elegant fit-out. The bright and airy space is accented with fresh plants, American oak and metalwork touches. Although there are little hideaway tables if you’re after some alone time, the large shared table is a visual emblem of the cafe’s emphasis on community.

It’s easy to see why Hawthorn locals have adopted Short Straw as their go-to for their daily coffee elixir. With a side of friendly conversation alongside your brunch, this neighbourhood gem is delivering much more than your average cafe.
