The name Ihana, meaning beautiful, lovely and wonderful in Jenni Morrison-Jack’s native Finnish, was her husband Ben’s idea. The simple name seeks to express the positive qualities of yoga practice, and it captures the atmosphere of the couple’s newest studio in St Kilda’s vibrant Acland Street.
Jenni’s studies in Masters of Science in Business Administration led her to find her passion in scientific research, which she has applied to teaching, researching, writing and lecturing about yoga. Her expertise in yoga anatomy has opened up opportunities for her to teach and lecture around Australia and overseas and her articles are frequently published in Australian Yoga Life. Jenni has been an invited speaker at the national Yoga Australia Conference as well as acting as an ambassador for activewear brand, Lululemon Athletica. She has taught yoga retreats since 2008 and in 2012, established a studio in Hampton. In 2015, she brought her extensive experience to a brand-new space in St Kilda.
Enjoy views out onto the palm trees of Acland Street at Ihana’s expansive, light-flooded studio and let the worries of the day melt away. Soundproofed windows create a calming environment, insulated from the stresses of the outside world. Sip on a complimentary tea before or after your class, or use the earthing mat to ground yourself.
Join a Vinyasa class for a flowing, continuous practice, led by a focus on the breath. You won’t find long static poses or hard-core power yoga here, as Jenni keeps the emphasis on dynamic, challenging but relaxing classes. Every class has adjustments for all levels, so you’ll easily be able to find a variation on each movement to match your experience and fitness. Jenni’s scientific background means you’ll be in very capable hands – her classes are based on thorough anatomical study rather than rote-learned movements.
During the course of each class you’ll move through each category of asana – warm-up, standing, seated, back bends and a cool down ending in restful savasana. Classes are creatively sequenced and often focus on specific goals, such as hip-opening or core strengthening. So you can build endurance, strength and flexibility in a supportive environment. Keeping with the natural flow of the breath encourages the physiological system to relax, so expect to walk out feeling light and refreshed.
If you’re an advanced yogi, Ihana runs a training program for qualified yoga teachers, offering further education in Post Graduate Yoga Teacher Training, the only one of its kind in Victoria.
Ihana Yoga also boasts environmental credentials. As part of the Green Yoga Association, Ihana strives to minimise its ecological impact, using planet-friendly cork blocks at its Hampton studio, zero-waste rubber mats, and natural cleaning products.
With the ideal balance of art and science, Jenni’s positive and anatomically grounded approach to yoga teaching will be sure to win you over.
