The team behind Red Spice Road and Meat Fish Wine has revealed a new and exciting look for CBD’s much loved Burma Lane.

The original Burma Lane sprung from a sold-out sensation showcasing Burmese style food during the Melbourne 2013 Food and Wine Festival. The laneway pop-up was so popular that the only logical step was to open a permanent venture, down the Paris end of Collins Street.

Burma Lane has undergone an amazing transformation in its recent renovation, with a brand new design and fresh-faced menu. The change sparks a movement from traditional Burmese food to more modern Australian fusion cuisine, representing our multicultural nature and influences.

Renowned street artist, Mike Eleven was commissioned to paint an impressive floor-to-ceiling mural in the restaurant, aptly named ‘Seasons of Change’. The two-part artwork incorporates projected video footage all around the theme of Melbourne.

The seasonal modern Australia menu will showcase the best and freshest produce on offer. Stop in for lunch or dinner and you’ll find tasty titbits such as scallops with prosciutto, cauliflower and smoked chilli pickle; and a duck, shiitake and water chestnut doughnut with chilli rock sugar salt and sour cherry. Tuck into a healthy bowl of nori noodles with squid, miso butter, green onion and crispy seaweed; or a refreshing green papaya salad with pickled carrot, beetroot, fennel, herb and cashew slaw.

For something left of centre try the Wagyu cheeseburger bacon dumplings with Vietnamese tomato sauce and pickle; or crunch on soft-shell crab with Chinese celery, green onion, egg and oyster sauce. For dessert the Hong Kong French toast is bound to please with Nutella and peanut butter brioche, condensed milk, rum ice cream, milk chocolate drizzle and mandarin.

Cocktails are kooky and someone definitely had a lot of fun naming them. ‘Hit me baby one more thyme’ combines Bress sparkling wine with pomegranate and thyme syrup; and ‘Sweet chai o’ mine’ mixes up spiced rum, apple cider, chai syrup, lemon, apple and whites.

The wine list is extensive and mostly from Australia, although a few European varieties sneak their way in. Beers and ciders showcase the best craft from home including Temple Brewing in Brunswick and Moon Dog in Abbotsford, as well as a few Japanese additions.

With a fresh new feel and exciting modern menu, the new Burma Lane represents a fusion of cultures and the best of both worlds. Smack bang in the middle of the CBD, it’s the perfect place for after-work cocktails or a relaxed dinner with friends.
