Forget acai, Buddha or smoothie bowls – there’s a new kid on the bowl block, poke. The Hawaiian delicacy is taking Australia by storm, with thousands taking to this dish like a fish to water.
Mahalo Poke is just one of the leaders in this trend, having introduced the concept to a wide number of Melburnians through UberEATS over the summer. After being run off their feet with deliveries, the team, who are also behind Thai restaurant Botherambo, decided to expand to a bricks and mortar store, spreading their love of the fishy treat even further.
Located right next door to its sister restaurant, Mahalo Poke is soon to become your one-stop shop for all your poke needs. Head Chef Kim Maree Moore has designed the simple menu, allowing everyone to create their own bowl of goodness.
But just what is poke? It’s best described as a deconstructed sushi bowl that surprises in taste, texture and wholesome ingredients. Start with one of four bases including kale, brown rice, jasmine rice or soba noodles, and top with their huge range of proteins, sauces and vegetables. If the choice overwhelms you, opt for one of the signature bowls, including the ‘Spicy Salmon’ with pickled ginger, corn, edamame, ka’ukama, carrot, purple cabbage, volcano ponzu and soy tahini sauce.
With the establishment of a proper base, Mahalo has also been able to expand its culinary offerings to breakfast and dinner. Stop by for a ‘Hula Waffle’, topped with pure maple syrup, bacon, house-made ice cream and macadamia crumble, or try their twist on the smashed avo, with togarashi and jalapeno salsa on sourdough. Dinner extends with burgers and includes the ‘Big Kahuna’, with buttermilk fried chicken, pineapple, bacon, apple cabbage, and wasabi slaw on a Hawaiian sweet bun.
If you’ve got the munchies for something little, or want to pimp up your order, sides include taro crisps with chilli salt; volcano chips with seaweed, Hawaiian salt and wasabi mayo, and edamame with miso butter. Continue the fresh feels with kombuchas and house-made smoothies, such as the ‘Coco Dragon’ with dragonfruit, mango chai, coconut, cashew, honey and coconut milk, Cold brew coffee is supplied by Niccolo, but if you’re after a little more, beer and wine are now on the menu.
Mahalo Poke’s pretty in pink corner store is as bright and colourful as its bowls. Open from early morning until late evening, it’s there for whenever you need a health kick.
