Mama Rumaan is all about traditional Middle Eastern recipes with a badass, new-school style.

Inspired by rich Middle Eastern flavours and good ol’ motherly love, Mama Rumaan is here to teach us a lesson: don’t eat, pray, love; just eat. You better listen because her recipes are on point.

The story behind the restaurant and canteen comes down to the rumaan – the Arabic name for pomegranate. The fruit, native to Iran, is used in numerous regional recipes, reflecting the vibrant, fresh vibe of the restaurant while also inspiring much of the menu.

In keeping with true Middle Eastern customs, we suggest you eat with your hands; after all, the menu is designed to share. Start with a trio of mezze dips: hummus, baba ganoush and jajik, served with fried pita with zaatar and flat bread. Throw in some lamb kibbeh and fried cauliflowers to keep you going while sipping on some delicious cocktails.

The Middle Eastern influence extends to the drinks list. With signature cocktails like the Sabah’s Rosie Eye – a pomegranate and rosewater martini, and the Sands of Sunset – a pomegranate and pink grapefruit spritz – who needs a decadent safari through the desert?

Once you’re ready to dig in, order some chicken ribs with pomegranate molasses and Mama’s garlic sauce. Other grilled options include spiced lamb koftas, marinated chicken or lamb tekka and veggie skewers. However, the one thing that shouldn’t be missed is the qouzi – a spiced rice dish with slow cooked lamb shoulder, pine nuts, chickpeas and pomegranate, most definitely made to share. Another tasty addition to your feast would be the fattoush, which is fragrant and fresh.

If you still have room for the dessert try Mama Tatiana’s kanafeh, a flawless finale to any Middle Eastern meal. But, if you feel like trying something new, the rosewater pannacotta is a sweet twist on another classic.

Mama Rumaan is one good-looking restaurant with bold pink details that contrast the minimal Arabian decor. Its contemporary design is effortlessly homely: long, feast-style dining tables, as well as small ones, ensure Mama Rumaan is a versatile space.

What are you waiting for? Yallah, yallah, hurry up and pay a visit to Mama Rumaan. Sit on the deck and smoke shisha by the waterfront, there’s no doubt this mama likes to keep it fresh.
