Noodle nuts and dumpling devotees will be pleased to hear that there’s a new kid on the block. His name? Mr Kwok.
Replacing Swanston Street’s much-loved Noodle Kingdom, Mr Kwok offers Chinese food with a Melbourne twist. Owner, Sze Tiffy, chose the name to pay homage to her father, previous tenant and Noodle Kingdom founder, Sze Kwok Wai.
As the name would suggest, Mr Kwok maintains many cherished elements of Noodle Kingdom, including a few standout dishes. But Tiffy has also been a breath of fresh air, infusing the space with new life where necessary.
Therefore, classic family recipes and traditional Gansu cuisine – from the north-west of China – all feature on the menu. Noodle Kingdom fave, brisket noodle soup, reappears on the menu and is available for those who know what they like, while handmade dumplings and noodles (pulled to order) are on offer until 3am weeknights and 5am on weekends.
The 52-seater restaurant was redesigned with the help of ZWEI Architects and features a walk-up noodle window, where keen customers can watch chefs create noodle after noodle before their eyes. While the space is unrecognisable from its former self, Mr Kwok includes all the kitsch and cheer that makes Chinatown so universally loved.
If you fancy a beverage before or after your meal, head on up to sibling venues Goldilocks Rooftop Bar and House of Correction for a cheeky cocktail or two.
Mr Kwok retains the best of much-loved Noodle Kingdom, while managing to stay fresh and exciting. Located in the heart of the CBD, the vivacious venue will fill you will dumplings and hand-made noodles into the wee hours of the morning.
