California has come to Chapel Street with The Silverlake Social.
The American style taphouse was originally going to be called SoCal Social, however, once their vision started to take shape, owners Byron Barrowclough and brothers Nicholas and Thomas Welch, decided that Los Angeles neighbourhood of Silver Lake summed up the new venue perfectly.
Silver Lake is renowned for its music, bars, food trucks and a multicultural blend of residents and artists. Prahran’s The Silverlake Social takes plenty of inspiration from its namesake with an American inspired menu, craft beers, fresh cocktails, Yankee sports and a carefully collated spectrum of American anthems.
The Silverlake Social trio have plenty of experience serving up American-inspired to Melburnians. Brothers, Nicholas and Thomas also own White Oaks Saloon, just around the corner in Prahran’s Greville Street. Their first venture is also named after a famous suburb – White Oaks in New Mexico has infamous ties to Billy the Kid.
The kitchen at The Silvelake Social is open until 12.30am, so there’s no need to rush. Relax and enjoy as many tasty offerings as you can. For a truly American twist on nachos, try the tatchos – tater tots topped with all the traditional toppings of salsa picante, guacamole, chipotle sour cream and, for an extra kick, freshly sliced jalapenos. There are also soft pretzels served with a brown sugar and dijon honey mustard dipping sauce, while carnivores can sink their teeth into baby back pork ribs with a housemade dry-rub and sweet, hot barbeque sauce.
For mains, the American-inspired offerings keep coming. Choose from the ultimate American style cheeseburger with beef patties, double American cheese, pickles, cos lettuce and special sauce in a soft milk bun, or perhaps you would prefer the Silverlake Dog with a smoked chorizo sausage, special sauce and house-made relish in a brioche bun. The strip steak is a stand out with a classic dry-rub and your choice of bourbon barbeque sauce, or a jalapeno infused sauce. Other spicy offerings include buffalo chicken wings served with pickle ranch. Taking inspiration from just south of the border is the chicken tinga burrito with rice, black beans, guacamole and chipotle sour cream on a hand-pressed tortilla.
If you’re still hungry, there are plenty of tempting sides; think mac and cheese with truffle oil and chives or sweet potato chips with chipotle mayo. Healthier options include baby beetroots with ricotta and parmesan, or a kale caesar salad.
Save room for dessert where there are plenty of indulgent American offerings. There’s a simple yet delicious home-style cherry pie or red velvet cheesecake. There’s also housemade ice cream; choose from buttermilk plum, or coffee, cookies and cream.
Wet your whistle with a selection from the expansive list of brews on offer. As well as offering American and local beers and ciders, you’ll also find a few international options thrown in the mix. Cocktails pay homage to some American icons; the Cape Cod is a simple combination of vodka, cranberry juice and rosemary syrup while the Silver Lake combines jalapeno-infused vodka with strawberry syrup, blood orange soda and agave. There’s also an expansive list of spirits with a special focus on whisky, with international varieties as well as a dedicated American list that features favourites like Jack Daniels, Wild Turkey and Knob Creek, as well as some harder to find varieties, including 10-year Whistle Pig.
For an American-inspired night out with all the trimmings, make your way to the Prahran end of Chapel Street and visit The Silverlake Social.
