A visit to The Merrywell is not simply dinner and drinks; it’s an experience. Situated in an ambient, brightly lit space, the food is funky and fresh; colourful cocktails come by the jug and the good times truly do roll.
The dual level burger bar and gastro pub was established by globetrotting American chefs, Grant Macpherson and Sam DeMarco in early 2012. The dynamic duo joined forces to create a casual restaurant, offering the perfect space for after-work drinks, delicious meals and everything in between.
Upstairs you will find tantalising dishes perfect for sharing or eating all on your own. Small plates, sharing platters, garden-fresh salads and wood-fired steaks served with lemon and house butter are plentiful up here in the bright, modern restaurant.
The appeal continues with mains like Mama’s meatballs; barbecued ribs with grilled corn and watermelon; and a salmon burger with Kewpie mayo, papaya slaw and fries. American-style sides are the perfect accompaniment to these mouth-watering combinations – will it be the baked mac and cheese; grilled corn with cheese; or ripped potatoes with bacon aioli?
The Merrywell also features a heated balcony, which overlooks Southbank and Melbourne’s Yarra River. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy one of the venue’s famed cocktails, wittily named after cult classics. Sip on the Deus Ex Machina – a decadent mix of marshmallow, vanilla vodka, Malibu and chocolate bitters, or a Through the Looking Glass – coconut tequila, pineapple, honey, orgeat and cream. Want to share the love with friends? Opt for a jug of the Sucker Punch, which features Absolut Citrus vodka, St Germaine elderflower liqueur, lemon, apple juice, mint and bubbles. The first one may disappear fairly quickly as the DJ fires up, but don’t stress – there’s plenty more where that came from.
If a delicious burger with a juicy patty and crisp salad is more up your alley, head downstairs and let Head Chef, Liam Walton, take your tastebuds on a journey. This American-diner-inspired space is perfect for a burger with a milkshake or cherry Coke float to wash it down. All of the beef burgers at The Merrywell are made using 100% grass-fed beef. You can taste the difference of quality in any one of the exceptional burgers, but customers tend to gravitate towards The Merrywell 2.0. With a cleverly balanced stack of beef, bacon, grilled onion, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, special sauce, ketchup and mayo, the burger has a firm reputation.
In true American diner style, downstairs also offers sandwiches – think classic Reubens, salads and loaded fries. These can be accompanied by an indulgent Fluffernutter – peanut butter and marshmallow, or a Bananarama milkshake. Staying true to its American heritage, The Merrywell also offers a selection of floats made with root beer, lemonade or lemon, lime and bitters.
The Merrywell is a place that fosters a good time. With casual fare that fills your belly, a cocktail list to rival any other and interesting decor to keep your mind entertained, pencil in a trip to The Merrywell in next time you’re in Melbourne.
