  • Great Date Venue

In an area crying out for attention, Wolfe and Molone is stepping in to spice things up. The wine bar, opened in January 2017, was the answer to many local’s prayers, with its extensive and unique selection of wines and inventive menu.

Tanya Hanouch’s plans to open a wine bar started in 2008. The initial location was set to be in the foodie hub of Prahran, in a site once owned by her parents. In researching the land, she discovered in 1849 it was owned by a woman whose two sons were a supreme judge and a policeman. Wolfe and Molone were their middle names, and despite the venue location falling through, the name stuck.

Normally we’d start with outlining the food, but wine is the centre of attention here. A specially curated list of more than 120 different wines took eight months for Tanya to put together, from small and local to unique international varietals. The wines have been selected to intrigue and expand guests’ palates with seasonal flavours and unique properties including biodynamic varieties.

The wine bible has a detailed description of each, with origin and tasting notes for both the savvy and the clueless so you walk out feeling like you really know your stuff. Order by the glass or share a bottle with friends. The retail section even allows you to take one home from the hard-to-find collection.

If you’re after something stronger than wine, the deconstructed dark and stormy is oh-so Melbourne, or a 2-ways cold drip martini with Proud Mary coffee and Mr Black should do the trick. A small selection of whiskies are ready when you are, and you can also find seasonal beers and ciders on tap and bottled.

The menu was designed for sharing, with inspiration drawn from Tanya’s European family and their style of eating. Cheese boards are absolute works of art with gorgeous garnishes of housemade pickles, quince, seasonal fruits and bread. Select from ‘queso’, ‘charcuterie’ or ‘vegetarian’ and design it to your liking. Options include baked divoletti stuffed with chilli olive, Jamon Iberico, and seasonal arancini.

Small nibbles include flamed tequila and honey chorizo with sweet potato chips, and deliciously crispy mac and cheese croquettes served with a bright array of colourful vegie smears and a crunchy blue cheese dip. For something a touch heartier, order the lamb cutlets with halloumi and peppered figs; or the mushroom, burnt butter and pesto spaghetti.

For dessert, the strawberry and speculoos tiramisu is sure to win you over, or try the meringue and lemon curd pie for that sweet finish. Pair either with a tipple of Pedro Ximinez or a cold-drip Proud Mary coffee.

The corner store has bi-folding windows that are perfect for catching the afternoon rays after work or on the weekend. You can sit right at the street-side counter, up on high tables, or by the bar for bigger groups. Moody lighting sets the scene with interiors crafted by Brandworks, and an impressive wine wall to ogle at. Leafy greens add a pop of colour and freshness above the bar and a sweet contrast to the all-black.

So grab a glass and some nibbles and get comfortable, because you won’t be able to leave after one.
