As the name suggests, Rough Diamond is a jewel in Warrnambool’s coffee crown, delivering premium specialty coffee and refined yet simple fare to the southwest coast of Victoria.
When design guru Katherine met musician Henry Bird, there was an instant connection. After beginning their cafe journey in the inner-city suburb of Flemington, they are now committed to creating great food and coffee experiences in their seaside hometown of Warrnambool.
As the third cafe venture for the couple, the prerequisites for the perfect space were long. After 12 months of searching for the location they found untapped potential in the form of a brown-brick block of 1960s offices. As Henry noted,“The name actually came about while trying to describe our vision to the sceptic locals who knew the place as a dark, dated unused office. But the bones were there and after taking out the internal walls, the light flooded in and the space just came alive.”
With more than 20 years’ experience in the coffee industry under his belt, Henry has seen coffee culture evolve from instant cappuccinos served in foam cups to the edgy spaces and skilled baristas of today. Over the years he has maintained a deep-rooted interest in coffee, but it was after forming a rapport with Small Batch Roasting Co’s founder, Andrew Kelly, that his interest in the bean’s journey really grew.
When it came to Rough Diamond’s house blend, Small Batch’s Candyman was the perfect choice. Comprised of three different origins, from either Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya or Ethiopia depending on supply, the taste profile exhibits notes of sweet caramel, fruit and toffee. This blend shines when paired with milk, which arrives fresh from local producer, Schulz Organic Milk.
Keentoshowcasemanyofthegreatcoffeesavailable these days, Rough Diamond also hosts guest roasters – you’ll spot names like Dukes Coffee Roasters, Wood and Co, MAKER Fine Coffee and Rumble on the menu every now and then.
Alongside those carefully crafted brews, Rough Diamond offers uncomplicated yet delicious breakfast and lunch options. In the kitchen, young local chef, Simone Daniels, has skillfully designed a fast, fresh menu that covers breakfast, lunch, salads and treats. Breakfast classics abound: think poached eggs on sourdough, smashed avo, and brioche BLTs. Lunch hits are hearty and healthy with Vietnamese chicken noodle salad, Korean pulled beef tortilla and toasted sandwiches.
The refined setting of Rough Diamond complements and enhances the region’s growing cafe culture, offering friendly service and delicious fare. Great cafe experiences are no longer just the stuff of hip inner suburbs but can be found on a journey along Victoria’s beautiful coastline. The locals wouldn’t have it any other way.
