Just a short stroll from Mornington beach you’ll find Store Fifteen, a holistic cafe based on the philosophy of delivering great coffee and nourishing food in a relaxed environment.
With backgrounds in marketing and medicine respectfully, Sian and Mat Lee didn’t always have plans to open a cafe. Growing up in Melbourne only fuelled their love for culinary experiences; the pair would spend their weekends seeking out quality produce at local markets and preparing home-cooked meals with a glass of wine in hand.
When the pair moved to the Mornington Peninsula, they noticed the region was missing a cafe focused on supplying locals with specialty coffee and wholesome brunch fare. Sian and Mat set to work creating a boutique cafe that locals and out-of-towners would return to, time and again.
Sian and Mat both have a passionate love affair with coffee. From the rise of fancy French Press in the early ’90s, to the discovery of standing espresso bars in Italy, coffee has long formed part of their daily routine. Likening coffee to wine or cheese, Sian and Mat believe that great coffee has the ability to tell a story and forge memories both at home and abroad.
Coffee is supplied by Melbourne-based Dukes Coffee Roasters, which ethically sources 100% Arabica beans from single estates and small farms. Sian and Mat have a personal relationship with the Dukes team and are constantly impressed by their consistency and attention to detail.
Dukes’ Market Blend is used for milk-based coffee, while the Espresso Blend is used for all lengths of black coffee and a variety of single origins are used for filter.
The espresso machine is manned by baristas who have spent time training in specialty coffee-making with local cafes and roasters. Alternative milk options, such as soy or house-made almond mylk are available, and there’s an extensive selection of Love Tea.
The menu at Store Fifteen is unmistakably healthy; free from unnecessary additives and preservatives and developed around whole, seasonal ingredients. Open for breakfast and lunch, the offerings are lean and clean but undeniably tasty. Think raw super smoothies, seedy hummus toast, kimchi pancakes or a vegan nacho bowl. The cold-pressed juices are pressed on-site, packed with superfoods and nutritional goodies to keep you going.
Knowing exactly the kind of look they wanted, the team designed the fit-out with the help of local builder, Andrew Pope. Working to create a space that is rustic and industrial, raw elements such as recycled timber, polished concrete and an exposed ceiling structure complement the organic inclinations of the food menu.
Whether you take a perch on the front bar to watch the passers-by, or nab a seat in the courtyard to catch some midday sun, Store Fifteen is a taste of Melbourne cafe magic against the easygoing backdrop of the stunning Mornington Peninsula.
