Home to the largest working restaurant kitchen garden in the Southern Hemisphere, The Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld is without a doubt at the top of the list of places to visit in the Grampians.
Its widely acclaimed restaurant claimed 2 hats from the Age Good Food Guide in 2015 and 2016, and 2017 brings more good news. This Victorian institution has announced the opening of Wickens at the Royal Mail Hotel in October this year, where you will be able to enjoy the incredible menu curated by the talented executive chef and namesake, Robin Wickens.
Wickens at the Royal Mail Hotel is set to follow in Wickens’ ‘nature-based’ cooking style, taking culinary cues from the garden and the season. Robin’s goal is to invigorate the connection between the land and the dining room, accentuated by the breathtaking aspect of the site.
In line with his holistic philosophy, Robin is putting on five- and eight-course tasting menus that showcase fresh produce grown in the revered chef’s own kitchen garden. The hotel breeds its own beef and lamb close by, so freshness is a guarantee when devouring any succulent meat on the menu.
Also not to be missed is the extensive wine selection on offer from the Royal Mail Hotel’s own cellar, playing host to $2.8 million worth of wine. Among these are is the Southern Hemisphere’s largest collection of Bordeaux and Burgundy wines. Think blue eye beans, peas and cultured cream with a drop of French Chablis to start, followed by the western district goat, beetroot and Japanese pepper with a glass of Western Australian Shiraz. For something sweet to finish off an incredibly decadent meal experience, opt for the mulberry, cider custard, anise hyssop and brown sugar ice cream complemented by a sip of Sanlucar de Barradeda Spanish dessert wine.
As the doors of the Wickens at the Royal Mail Hotel open, the original dining room will close, allowing for the immensely popular casual dining room Parker Street Project to take its place.
The countdown begins now – as of October Wickens at the Royal Mail Hotel will be serving up three and five course tasting menus for Lunch from Thursday to Sunday, and five and eight courses for Dinner from Wednesday to Sunday.
