Kyneton’s quintessential French bistro and bar, Midnight Starling, has a hidden secret. Beneath the bistro is a hidden French wine cave inspired dining room, Ma Cave.
Ma Cave at Midnight Starling offers a truly unique fine dining experience. Head Chef and owner, Steven Rogers is up to the challenge of French inspired fine dining after spending time working with the likes of Jacque Reymond, Michael Rostange and even Pierre Gagnaire. Steven will demonstrate his Michelin starred, classically trained skills with degustation menu.
“Ever since I embarked on my career as a classically trained chef and opened Midnight Starling, it has been an ambition of mine to create an intimate restaurant and experience that is truly reflective of my capabilities, philosophy and the local landscape.”
Diners can choose between either five or eight courses that incorporate Midnight Starling’s philosophy of using locally sourced, fresh and seasonal produce. While Midnight Starling is known for its rustic flair, Ma Cave presents a more refine approach to dining. Signature dishes include poached cuttlefish with bronze fennel and wood sorrel salad, grilled rouget with glazed cipollini onion and rouget liver sauce. Roast venison is served rare with glazed shallots and celeriac puree and the evening concludes with a selection of petits fours.
Ma Cave has a selection of hand picked European wines, French Michel Couvrier whiskies and classic cocktails.
While upstairs Midnight Starling mirrors the region’s rustic beauty, Ma Cave has been designed in complete contrast. Bluestone walls and exposed beams give the appearance of a European wine cave and a French-grey colour palate complement the surrounds and refined dining options.
The intimate hidden dining room is limited to 24 guests at a time and is open on Friday and Saturday evenings, or for private events.
