Chic cafe by day, restaurant slash bar by night, The Federal breathes new life into one of Geelong’s most historic buildings.

The Federal is the brainchild of Torquay local, Nathalie Moussi, which she has created with the support of her two brothers. Set to become a favourite for food, wine, coffee and everything in between, the Federal combines Nathalie’s love for the region with her passion for hospitality.

Hospitality is in Nathalie’s blood – her parents were veterans of the industry, owning Geelong cafes Kat Kat, the Lynette and Top of the Town among others. “Our father passed away in 2001 but he instilled a love of hospitality in my brothers and I so it’s wonderful to see our new venture coming to life in his memory,” said Nathalie.

The Federal is open seven days a week allowing local residents to enjoy a relaxed coffee and brunch in the morning, stop by for a quick afternoon treat or sample the modern Australian cuisine on offer with a glass of local beer or wine any day of the week.

Start your morning with a house-made crumpet with sautéed mushroom, basil oil and green mizuna, or the creamy eggs benedict with grilled serrano, poached eggs and hollandaise. Lunch offers a selection of healthy takeaway sandwiches and salads, as well as the option to sit in and enjoy a burger with thick-cut fries.

If you’re arriving for dinner, take a seat in the dining area or settle down into one of the comfortable booths. Start with a range of dishes to share such as the moreish pork gruyere and shallot croquette with house-made piccalilli, and the Nashville-style fried check sparerib with white bread, hot sauce and butter pickles. You can’t go past a pizza or two to share – the crispy bases are topped with everything from root vegetables to Portarlington mussels and caramelised fig. However, if you’re feeling hungry opt for the thick-cut porterhouse or the pan-seared kangaroo – both are cooked to perfection and served with seasonal sides.

Whichever way you go, be sure to save room for dessert, the in-house pastry chef whips up a variety of creations every morning, with each dish boasting a number of house-made gelato flavours. The rhubarb tartin comes with a pinot and liquorice glaze, irresistible 1760s’ English brown bread ice-cream, rhubarb flame and syrup.

The design of the venue, by Kylie Sargent, pays homage to the building’s rich history – built in 1915, it was originally home to a wool mill where workers would weave uniforms for the Army. Kylie has complemented this with a selection of bespoke art deco design elements to ensure the space is modern, while staying true to its roots.

The Federal adds to the already impressive line up of cafes and restaurants in Geelong. Locals will have another option for coffee and delicious fare, while the likes of King of the Castle, Freckleduck and the Sprout and the Bean continue to impress and delight across town.

It’s amazing what you can do with an ex-wool mill, a passion for hospitality and a little bit of love. Nathalie Moussi’s, the Federal, is a one stop shop for coffee, cake, food and wine, any day of the week.
