Set in a former 19th century furniture factory in Annandale, Black Toast benefits from the period features. High ceilings, expansive floor plan and a sun-filled atrium garden make this vast space, set over two levels, the place to be in the inner west. Decorating the space are eclectic artworks, funky vintage toys and coffee-themed equipment. The exposed joists give hints to the building’s age and history.
Black Toast sources its coffee from Campos. The cafe has a long-standing relationship with the company and respect the consistency of the product. Traditional blending methods and cold drip are on offer here, all lovingly prepared by the team of dedicated baristas.
The vibe here is unpretentious, quirky, fun and inviting. Frequented mostly by locals, including plenty of young families and couples, the atmosphere is friendly and the food and coffee offerings are simple but authentic, fresh, local and modern. Open for all day breakfast and lunch from midday, Black Toast boasts a menu that is all about the produce. Hearty and imaginative breakfasts complement the delicious coffee bean aromas on lazy weekend mornings, or for those in a hurry there are freshly baked muffins, mouth-watering sweets, and an array of savoury choices ready to be taken away.
The food is wholesome and nutritious and is sourced from partners who share Black Toast’s philosophy on food. Keep it fresh, local and simple. Bread is delivered fresh from the Sonoma Bakery, sweets are from Madhouse Bakehouse, Yael’s Cakes, Ms. Cupcake and Madeleine Fine Food. Try the breaky wrap, or the Birdie Brekky – two poached eggs on a homemade potato rostie with Portobello mushrooms, house smoked bacon and avocado. Or for something a little… ‘manlier’ try the Manwich – double bacon, double egg, smashed avocado, cheese and golden hash browns with homemade relish or BBQ Sauce. You can even purchase a jar of the relish to take home with you along with an array of other Black Toast products that are available.
The large, diverse space lends itself perfectly to functions of all types, from corporate events to private functions, from art exhibitions to book launches. With plenty of room to mingle, lots of conversation starters hanging from the walls and a team of young and vibrant staff, events are guaranteed to be a hit. Every so often you’ll find an interesting event open to the public, like the Black Toast Garage Sale, where customers can take home some of the cafe’s unique collection of knickknacks and furniture. Local artists’ work is featured on the walls, with the collection changing regularly.
You can relax in an armchair, or sit at one of the aptly vintage, funky op-shop style tables. It’s an art gallery meets a retro homewares store meets an on point cafe, and it’s no wonder it’s so popular.
