Watchmaker at Piccolina
296 Smith Street, Collingwood
16th-26th of March 2017
Piccolina Gelateria is known for its stunning design, so it only made sense that Sandra Foti, interior designer turned gelato-maker extraordinaire, would participate in Melbourne’s inaugural Design Week.
While the second Piccolina Gelateria is set to open later this year, owner Sandra is opening the doors early to host Watchmaker in collaboration with NGV.
As an offsite location for the NGV, Watchmaker is home to several installations over the 10-day event. Apparatus 4, presented by 227768C, is an installation formed by a surface that alters according to a randomised algorithm. As you stand on the surface, it changes subtly causing you to adjust your physical location and posture.
The Found Object, presented by Hub Furniture, will also take up residence in Watchmaker. Hub Furniture has collected a small group of highly creative Melbourne designers to share objects they have gathered and treasured.
Nick Horan will present Ovoid, a selection of fine art photographs of eggs. The collection speaks to an endless life cycle and celebrates the purest of nature’s productions.
26 Original Fakes, presented by Friends and Associates, showcases how 26 contemporary Australian designers reconfigured and exhibited an existing replica design as a way to deconstruct how the design object is valued.
Coco & Maximilian is also showcasing videos made with Piccolina. The film, Untitled (with Gelato), depicts a couple who fall deeply in and then out of love – just like a melting sorbet you can tell what’s going to happen but as sad as it is, you may as well enjoy it.
Once you’ve taken in all the artworks and installations, it’s time to satisfy cravings of a different kind – Piccolina will be serving free cups of gelato throughout the week. It’s also a unique chance to take a sneak peek at Piccolina’s new space before the heritage building is renovated.
Watchmaker is located at Piccolina Gelateria – 296 Smith Street Collingwood and is open Monday – Friday between 1pm – 7pm and Saturday & Sunday between 10am – 6pm from 16-26 March (Watchmaker will be closed Sunday 19 March from 3pm-6pm). Entry is free.
